04/14/2024 - New Plane: Thunder Junction Added!

The brand-new plane of Thunder Junction has been added to the Multiverse and now it has its own Planar Page to match! Check out the lore summary and the cards from the Commander set and various promos.

04/04/2024 - Spot Updates

Hi there everyone, and happy Spring to those in the northern hemisphere! I’m just popping in during the Thunder Junction previews to make two spot updates pointed out by two eagle-eyed Vothoses:

Prowling Pangoloin from Eternal Masters was pointed out to be from Innistrad by fan Ravenshorne. In the foreground of the art are two Cathars, their tricorn hats fairly iconic. Innistrad is known to have some monstrous but mundane creatures, so this is a fine fit!

Liliana’s Devotee from M21 was incorrectly placed on the Dominaria planar page with the other Liliana cards from that set. However, as pointed out by Luke00, there is the symbol of Avacyn’s church, her collar, on a tombstone between the two zombies in the bottom-right corner of the art, so it belongs on Innistrad’s Planar Page. Such a small detail, but there it is! Nice work to both of these sleuths!

02/10/2024 - Ravnica: Murders at Karlov Manner

Happy New Year 2024 to everyone!

For this year’s first update, I’ve got a bunch of additions for you all! With the release of the new Ravnica: Murders at Karlov Manner set, there’s additions all over the Ravnica Plane Page for the new ‘special guests’, the new commander cards, the Clue edition, and the addition of Anzrag and the Living Guildpact to the “Gods and Avatars” list. In addition, Kamigawa has two new cards added from the Year of the Dragon release: Dragon Tempest & Steel Hellkite.

12/04/2023 - Community Updates

Some fellow Vorthos lore-lovers have written in with some new insights for the Magic Multiverse.

  • The Secret Lair Mountains series has been added to Lorwyn due to the flavour text being attributed to the primarily Lorwyn-aligned Kithkinpoet Narvek Riag.

  • Ganathog the Oggyar has been added to the lore of Arcavios thanks to a reccomendation from Finn Lowry.

  • Kediss has been added to Eldraine’s plane page after observations by fan Матвей. Although initially left out because Eldraine has no elementals in the initial set, Wilds of Eldraine brought us numerous elementals, and so the little lizard sitting amongst knight armor and named in a way similar to Embercleave gets added in.

  • LCI’s Tainted Field has been added to the Ixalan page thanks to fan of the page and keen-eyed Vorthos Martino.

  • Thanks to an insight from fan of the site Tim that Therosian tritons don’t refer to themselves as “merfolk”, Coral Merfolk has been moved from Theros to Zendikar.

  • Two new elder titans from the Theros D&D module have been added to the lore on the Theros planar page thanks to fellow lore historian Edward: Phlage, Titan of Burning Wind and Skotha, Titan of Eternal Dark.

  • Blood-Cursed Knight has been moved from Innistrad to Dominaria thanks to insight from vorthos Nathan and the combined insights of a number of other fans over the years. The reasoning is a bit long-winded, but I’ll post it here because it’s so often discussed:

    • Every card in Origins is reported to be on one of the planes listed for the st: Alara, Dominaria, Innistrad, Kaladesh, Lorwyn, Ravnica, Regatha, Theros, Vryn, or Zendikar.

    • Although the archetypes for each part of the set are generally aligned by plane, they certainly are not exclusive to any plane. The easiest card to point out here is the obviously Kaladesh-native white Renown card Consul's Lieutenant, but there's loads of examples.

    • Alaran vampires reside on Grixis, and are flying creatures embraced by bats and other vemin. They are usually some combination of blue-black-red mana, and feed on Vis.

    • Dominarian vampires are mostly descended from the Sengir line, though not all, and tend to resemble horrific nosferatu-type vampires. The one example to contrast this is Arvad, the noble vampiric paladin of the Weatherlight, who was notably human except for his glowing red eyes.

    • Innistradi vampires are unique in that they are not actually undead and still have a soul (and thus can be planeswalkers, such as Sorin Markov). There are many lineages, but they all have iconic golden irises and black sclera.

    • Kaladesh, Lorwyn, Regatha, Theros, and Vryn have no known vampires.

    • Ravnica has psychic vampires, which tend to be blue-black aligned and associated with the Dimir guild. Some are monstrous, like the moroii, while others tend to be more humanoid. Nearly all of them seem to fly.

    • Zendikar has a large number of vampires, but they are descended from Eldrazi spawn and covered in fairly iconic chiton armor, horn-spines, and covered in red paint

    • The setting is clerarly not Alara/Grixis, Ravnica, or Zendikar, so that brings us to Dominaria or Innistrad, which is the debate that folks tend to come to. Initially I had associated the classic armor and style of the vampire with Innistrad, comparing it to art on cards like Campaign of Vengeance. However, upon finding HD art of it recently, I can now see it has bright red eyes... making it a Dominarian vampire!

11/06/2023 - Caverns of Ixalan Update & Wilds of Eldraine Concept Art

Caverns of Ixalan is here! There’s a slew of Commander decks that have given us a lot of new cards, as well as a change to draft boosters and “the list” that also have injected fun flavour-aligned cards for everyone’s favorite plane of dinosaurs and pirates. The commander decks especially had a lot of “classic” cards included for Ixalan-themed decks and cubes, such as Cultivate and Farseek. Check out the planar page for Ixalan here!

In addition, there’s a band-new page for collecting all of the concept art for Wilds of Eldraine. I’ve compiled everything I’ve been able to hunt down, but if you find anything new, please let me know. The artwork really is beautiful.

09/19/2023 - Promo Tail Swipe addition

The new promo Tail Swipe has been added to the Eldraine planar page. Originally from Dominaria, this new little ouphe gets to slot in with our most recent standard set. His design is right in-line with the design of recent Eldraine-native Ouphes with their chia-pet hair, lion-like tales, and tawny orange-brown skin. Take a look at Troublemaker Ouphe and Toadstool Admirer for examples.

09/14/2023 - Commander Masters 2023 Review and More!

It’s done! I’ve finally finished and published my review of Commander Masters 2023, and you can find it over here on the Set Reviews page. I really appreciate everyone’s patience in me getting it out. In addition, I’ve made a few additions to the site:

08/22/2023 - Some Updates!

Happy August everyone. I’ve got a slew of updates for the site for you today:

  • Pact of the Titan has been added to the Ir planar page. Initially from Planar Chaos, which is a set untethered from one particular plane, I realized it belonged on Ir when I was made aware that the token it creates is specifically a Fomori Nomad.

  • The “Universes Within” re-skinned cards for the Secret Lair: The Walking Dead have finally been spoiled and they are a total slam-dunk. All are located on Innistrad, and have been added to the Innistrad planar page.

  • A new, long-overdue summary re-write has been made for the Eldraine planar page that adds more context for the plane itself.

  • I have to send a huge thank-you to Andy & Anthony of the fantastic Lucky Paper Radio podcast; of which I am an avid listener. If you haven’t checked them out, I highly recommend it; they’re some of the best MtG content creators in the business. They referenced The Multiverse Project as a resource for cube designers on their 160th episode “Restrictions Breed Podcast Topics” when discussing aesthetic restrictions for building cubes.

Finally, my review of Commander Legends 2023 is coming soon; I promise!

07/17/2023 - Oops! No Slivers?

With the spoilers for Commander Legends 2023 in full swing, and my Set Review for that and the supplementary commander decks in process, it dawned on me that I missed something important during the release of the Original Modern Horizons set. Seeing the reveal of Rukarumel, Biologist from the Sliver commander precon had me digging through old flavour texts on Scryfall to place her, and I discovered that she’s mentioned on Time Spiral slivers (aka Dominaria) AND on a single sliver from Modern Horizons: Hollowhead sliver. Given that WotC has been a little fast-and-loose with Slivers this go-around, it’s always difficult if you can place some of them “in-canon”, but this at least implies that they belong on Dominaria unless there’s reason they shouldn’t. So, I’ve added them in (sans The First Sliver, naturally). One more past misstep fixed!

Stay tuned for that commander legends set review!

05/11/2023 - More Concepts!

Surprise art update, one and all! I’ve added a few new pieces of concept art to the following pages and added some new ones!

05/04/2023 - March of the Machine: Aftermath

With the full release of the March of the Machine: Aftermath mini-set, a bunch of updates have been made to the planar pages. The planes updated are: Amonkhet, Arcavios, The Blind Eternities, Dominaria, Eldraine, Ikoria, Innistrad, Ixalan, Kaladesh, Kaldheim, Kamigawa, New Capenna, Ravnica, Tarkir, Theros, Zendikar, and Zhalfir. Check them out!

In addition, I’ve added all of the cards from the D&D movie Secret Lair tie-in to the Forgotten Realms planar entry. See that movie, by the way! It’s great fun.

04/08/2023 - March of the Machine

It’s here! The March of the Machine Special Mega-Giant Set Review is Live! And, to back it up, all of the planes have been updated with the new cards from the set. I’m going to go take a nap and ice my wrist.

04/06/2023 - New Plane Alert!

Thanks to March of the Machine, there are a lot of new planes in the Magic Multiverse that have at least one card that takes place on them, and thus they need an entry in this project. Although the review of MOM is upcoming, here are the new planes that have been added to the site:

Oh, and there’s a search function now! It’s still a work in progress, but let me know if you find it to be useful.

04/05/2023 - A Few Spot Updates

A few card additions and two planar entries have been renamed thanks to March of the Machine’s planechase suppliment:

  • Touch of the Spirit Realm (promo) was added to Dominaria.

  • Wheel and Deal (Secret Lair) was added to New Capenna.

  • Master of the Wild Hunt (Secret Lair) was added to Kamigawa.

  • Lathiel the Bounteous Dawn was added to Eldraine after confirmation from March of the Machine’s bonus sheet.

  • Repercussion (Secret Lair) was added to Ravnica as it features the events of War of the Spark.

  • Valorous Stance (Jumpstart) was added to Mirrodin.

  • Spellstutter Sprite (Jumpstart) was added to Eldraine

  • The plane formerly known as “Hell” has been officially named as “The Abyss”,  with a location within it known as “The Pit” thanks to planechase cards in March of the Machine.

  • The plane “The Plane of Mountains and Seas” has been officially named as “Shenmeng” thanks to planechase cards in March of the Machine.

03/29/2023 - Spot Updates & March of the Machine Announcement

First off, a few housekeeping additions have been made to the planar almanac:

  1. With the spoilers from March of the Machine we’ve learned that Imoti, Celebrant of Bounty from the Commander Masters set is from Amonkhet. You’ll note I didn’t initially include her because she has six arms: four more than any other naga on that plane. But it’s a big world (presumably) and she’s got a bounty of limbs.

  2. The full-art promo of Flame Javelin and the 10th edition Joiner Adept have been added to Dominaria; the former depicting a Ghitu fire mage, and the latter a pretty standard Yavimaya elf.

  3. The Giant Growth from the 9th Edition core set features a familiar species of 4-armed snakefolk, and thus has been added to Kamigawa! I love random core set nods like this, although the environment looks like a desert, which is a little odd. Anyway…

Secondly, with the advent of March of the Machine and its multiversal nature, I’ll be doing a full March of the Machine set review! It’ll be a little bit different than the usual set reviews, but keep your eyes peeled!

03/02/2023 - Alchemy: ONE and Even MORE Concept Art!

That’s right; a week later and we have about double the concept art for Phyrexia: All Will Be One than we started with. This is possibly the most art I’ve seen for a set besides the recent visit to Kamigawa and Kaldheim, but in general it seems that it’s really up to the concept artists if they want to publish their artwork or not. As someone who always wanted to do concept work for WotC, I can’t imagine not publishing it online; it’s so damn cool and a gift to the community.

Also Alchemy cards came out for the new set. They’re on the bottom of the New Phyrexia planar page.

02/23/2023 - The Concept Art of New Phyrexia: All Will Be One

There’s probably more coming in the next few weeks, but I’ve compiled a massive amount of concept art for the new set Phyrexia: All Will Be One and created a new concept art page for it. Check out the amazing work by the super talented concept artists over at WotC!

02/18/2023 - Lore Edits, Concept Art, & Quick Updates

With MagicFest 2023 in full swing, and with the release of ONE, I’ve gone through and made some small updates to the pages & content of MtG-Multiverse:

  • After seeing some concept art for New Phyrexia: All Will Be One from artist Jehan Choo, it was immediately obvious to me that the Phyrexian Plaguelord from JumpStart 2023 was not from Old Phyrexia as I initially assumed. This has been corrected, and it’s now included on the New Phyrexia planar page.

  • With the new movement in New Phyrexia and the move to multiple invasions, I’ve added some additional content to the New Phyrexia planar summary on the planar page to bring us up to the present.

  • In addition, I’ve added content for the New Phyrexian Invasion to the Dominaria planar page.

  • There’s a new Concept Art page entry for the Core Set 7th Edition, with artwork almost entirely by artist RK Post. A photocopy of the style guide surfaced recently(ish) and I’ve managed to put up the new pictures accordingly. Ah, how times have changed.

01/24/2023 - ONE Update

Happy new year fellow MtG fans! With the upcoming release of New Phyrexia: All Will Be One the New Phyrexia planar page has been updated with the commander and ‘booster fun’ cards that have just been spoiled. In addition, I missed a full-art promo Sign in Blood a while back that depicts a Phyrexian, but is absolutely on Dominaria, so that’s been added to the Dominaria planar page.

12/13/2022 - Universes Within: Street Fighter

While everyone is out there getting mad hype for New Phyrexia: All Will Be One spoilers, I’m over here amped because we have Universes Within cards to enjoy! The latest batch is a re-skin of the Street Fighter Secret Lair drop, which had both really cool designs and very difficult flavour points to match. But somehow, WotC did it! Eight new legends join the ranks of Dominaria, some more obvious than others. When WotC does these, they place them all on one plane, and usually the most recently visited one, which is lucky for us as placing some of these is near impossible. So here’s a mini Planar review for you all:

  1. Aisha of Sparks and Smoke - Giant, poofy hair, a wiggly sword, and yellow(?) robes… I couldn’t tell you where Aisha was from if not for the drop being a batch.

  2. Baldin, Century Herdmaster- Sweet, now I have a new legend for my ‘Gone Farmin’ Jumpstart theme booster. And yes, that’s a real thing I’ve designed. Baldin has the trappings of a classic arboreal farmer, so he’s unlikely to be a Zendikari native and fits much more squarely on the Balduvian Steppes.

  3. Immard, the Stormcleaver- The armor, powerstone axe, and cogwork ruins place this hero squarely in New Argive.

  4. Maarika, Brutal Gladiator- The biggest gladiator arena around is the Cabal’s fighting pits, and Maarika here looks like she takes after the tried-and-true legacy of Kamahl and other barbarians dominating in the ring. The red and black banners behind her sell that this really is Cabal territory.

  5. Tadeas, Juniper Ascendant- Tadeas here is a member of the Juniper Order of druids, hailing initially from Kjeldor and interacting between there and Yavimaya. The perfect locale to find a Green and White card.

  6. The Howling Abomination- I tip my hat to whoever concepted this card. Having to fit a “human beast” on Dominaria isn’t easy, but the plane is full of one-off magical monstrosities, so it’s not hard to imagine. The elves in the image are classic Llanowar elves, as indicated by their scalp tattoos.

  7. Vikya, Scotching Stalwart- When WotC announced we’d get a lot more of New Argive in Dominaria United, they mentioned that it had a lot of artifice in it. Color me surprised, then, that we got very little actual clockwork elements for our super-cool Scandinavian-inspired knights to play with. Vikya here does a lot to sell the concept with her teal-and-yellow triangle patterned clothing and her absolutely awesome mechanical arm.

  8. Zethi, Arcane Blademaster- Zethi is a bad-ass, there’s no doubt, but nothing about her screams Dominarian to me; similar to Aisha up top. Glad she’s part of a package deal!

12/02/2022 - JumpStart 2022 Multiverse Set Review

After getting a chance to browse the Artstation of the brilliant Leon Tukker, I’ve got a lot more art I’ve added to the Brother’s War concept art page. Go check it out!

12/01/2022 - JumpStart 2022 Multiverse Set Review

It’s live! Go check it out!

11/26/2022 - Game Night

With the release of the new Game Night 2022 product, we’ve gotten five new legendary creature cards for five new characters. I’ve been able to place two of them onto the plane of Dominaria: Imaryll the elf is from Llanowar, and and Nogi the Kobold is from Kher Keep, Shiv, or another dragon-adjacent red part of the plane. Check them out on the Dominaria plane page.

In addition, I’ve got a new Set Review in the works! It’s been a while since WotC has dropped a large enough batch of cards to be worthy of a review, but in this case JumpStart 2022 is looking like it’s going to make for a great Vorthos-y analysis. Look for that in the next few weeks.

11/12/2022 - The Brothers War Commander Update

With the release of the brand-new set The Brothers War, we’ve gotten tons of juicy new cards for the Dominaria plane from both the commander set and the JumpStart cards. These have been updated, as as the Amonkhet planar page with the new art variation of Sphinx’s Revelation.

10/14/2022 - Dominaria Alchemy Update & Dominaria Concept Art

There’s not much for Magic’s extended universe currently, with the current releases being tied to Warhammer or the Brother’s War, but Alchemy has given us a glimpse at some other fun and bizarre little Dominaria-flavour morsels. A lot of these cards are interesting, and I wish they were designed for paper play, but that’s the nature of the product. I’ve added the latest Dominaria Alchemy update to the Dominaria page, as well as the WPN 2022 Phyrexian Dismember promo.

In addition, check it out! There’s been enough concept art released from Dominaria United to make a new entry.

08/27/2022 - Dominaria & Double Masters Update

We’ve got a few updates today! The first is better late than never: all of the new cards from the latest Double Masters have been added to their respective planar pages, so most planes have found themselves with one or two new entries.

In addition, all of the new Dominaria-homed cards from the Dominaria United commander sets & decks have been added to that page

Fellow vorthos Wesley kindly pointed out that the planar pages were all missing the invocations & expeditions associated with each plane sans the Arcavios Mystical Archives from Strixhaven, which is a massive issue! I’ve since corrected the Amonkhet, Zendikar, and Kaladesh pages with new links.

Wesley also pointed out a card I think I’ve never seen: a variant of Path of Ancestry from MagicFest 2021. The argument was made for inclusion in the Blind Eternities, and I had to agree; it’s the right kind of abstract to fit alongside the Ur-Dragon, or even depict planeswalking to some degree.

The card Brittle Effigy was also added to Shandalar - Watercourser, a card already on the Shandalar page due to its existence and visual resonance with the blooming lotuses in the background, shares a character in flavour text with Brittle Effigy (Martyne). As the Effigy can certainly be deemed planar agnostic, but has a certain similarity to the artifacts we’ve seen on the plane before, I’ve added it as well.

07/08/2022 - Multiverse Set Review: Double Masters 2022

It may not be a core set, but it deserves a review all the same! Check out the latest Multiverse Set Review: Double Masters 2022, over in the written articles. A few edits have been made already thanks to fantastic community feedback.

06/21/2022 - Kamigawa+ Secret Lairs

One of the most recent secret lairs from WotC contains a slew of cards from the new state of Kamigawa, including Kaito & friends. They’ve all been added to the Kamigawa Planar page to flesh things out. In addition, other cards from the same Superdrop have been added to other planes, including Ravnica, Kaladesh, & Theros.

06/04/2022 - Play Day Promos 2022

Three new promos have three new pieces of art, and they’ve been added to the planar pages. A new Archmage’s Charm featuring Teferi and a new Flame Slash featuring a Tarmogoyf have each been added to Dominaria’s planar page. A full-art Dark Confidant has been added to the New Capenna planar page.

05/01/2022 - Updates from fellow Vorthos Dylan

Fellow Vortho and fan of the site Dylan has made some great insights into a few cards that have been added to the individual planar pages. I’ll let him speak for himself on this one, where he was spot-on:

  • Giant Solifuge (Eternal Masters) - Zenndikar. Not only does it look distinctively Zenndikarian (which has a ring to it), but the flavour text is attributed to a 'caravan master.'

  • Stony Silence (Modern Masters 2017) - Eldraine. I've always loved the serene atmosphere of this art, and how it so sharply contrasts the original Innistrad printing. I feel that the serene landscape reminds of the Eldraine plains, and the statue's design matches the slightly goofy artifact creatures (Roving Keep) and middle ages stonework designs we see on the plane. This is admittedly a bit of a subjective stretch that I'm reading far too much into, but I can't see anything other than Eldraine.

  • Seal of Fire (Duel Decks: Jace vs Chandra) - Regatha. While it's entirely possible that it still takes place on Dominiara like the original printing, the fact that it depicts a very early-planeswalking Chandra (in part thanks to the flavour text) makes me think of Regatha. Plus, those big doors feel like monk monastery-type doors, or am I just overthinking things?

  • Spectral Procession (DD: Sorin v Tibalt) - Innistrad. Spooky Gothic mansion with spooky gothic ghosts, included in a duel deck with new art for cards that take place (I think) exclusively on Innistrad. This was probably more of an oversight than a snub, I'd guess.

04/01/2022 - Digital-Only (Alchemy) Rework & Forgotten Realms Commander Decks

Over the past year, Wizards of the Coast has released a slurry of digital-only cards that use digital-only mechanics. My initial take on the first of these releases can be found over on my review of JumpStart Historic Horizons , but each set now has many cards created for Arena that can’t ever be printed in paper. Because of this, I’ve opted to separate the digital-only cards for each plane on each page, putting them into a “Digital-Only Cards/Card Arts” section for each planar entry. Currently the following content added is:

  • Alara (1)

  • Arcavios (2)

  • Dominaria (8)

  • Innistrad (66)

  • Ixalan (4)

  • Kaladesh (3)

  • Kaldheim (4)

  • Kamigawa (31)

  • Ravnica (13)

  • Shandalar (1)

  • Tarkir (5)

  • Theros (1)

  • Zendikar (2)

New Capenna is currently ongoing, but at 27 and counting. I will add those in when the spoilers are complete.

In addition, the Forgotten Realms planar page has all of the new cards added for the latest commander decks, and has a link to the new Baldur’s Gate commander draft set.

03/29/2022 - Concept Art Overhaul

After some reflection, we’ve been working to revamp the design of the Concept Art page. Rather than offer a full “planar” page for the artwork, we’re putting together plane concept art based on the sets the art was done for. The hope is that this will provide a better view of a plane’s evolution, from early concept to third or fourth visit.

We’ve also added loads of new concept art to Strixhaven, Kaldheim, and Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. Up next: New Capenna!

03/19/2022 - Universes Within: Innistrad & Stranger Things

With the release of the new Innistrad-themed Stranger Things cards for “Universes Within”, the Innistrad Planar page has been updated with the newly flavoured legends and lands.

02/22/2022 - Kamigawa Explosion

I heard people like Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. Well we’ve got more for you! The cards from the Commander decks have been added to the Kamigawa planar page, and the concept art for Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty has tons of new entries. Check it out!

02/05/2022 - MORE Concept Art!

After spending a long, long time compiling it, I’ve put together the concept art page for Kaldheim. There’s a ton of cool artwork from the development of ten realms, so check it out!

02/03/2022 - Concept Art!

In the middle of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty preview season we’ve got some fun updates for you all:

In addition, I’ve begun to re-organize the concept art pages. For clarity & brevity, I’ll be updating and organizing them by set/block, rather than plane.

01/01/2022 - Single Card Updates & Magic “Alchemy”

Happy new year one and all! I’ve got a few card updates from keen-eyed fans, as well as a comment on the new Magic set Alchemy for Magic the Gathering Arena. When the first digital-only products were released for Arena, they were few and far-between, and I opted to include them in our card lists. However, with the amount of digital-only cards being released threatening to overcrowd the current lists, I’m planning on taking a new approach to digital cards. I will be including Alchemy and this approach in a new update.

Now onto some fun updates from fellow Vorthos':

11/14/2021 - Commander: Crimson Vow Update

With a new set comes a new set of Commander decks, and we’re here with an update for Commander: Crimson Vow! A slew of new cards from the vampire and spirit decks have been added to the Innistrad Planar page, with 8 new cards to white, 8 to blue, 8 to black, 8 to red, 2 to green, and 5 to gold. Interestingly, combined with cards from Midnight Hunt, we’ve gotten a lot of new cards for Innistrad.

Adding the 7 white, 7 blue, 8 black, 2 red, 8 green, and 5 gold from the last set, in the past few months Innistrad has gained 15 new white cards, 15 new blue, 16 new black, 10 new red, 10 new green, and 10 new gold cards, for a total of 76 new cards. That’s almost a third of a set! Here’s to all the new fun archetypes for cubes, commander decks, and the rest of those out there.

10/04/2021 - Commander Collection: Black Update

Happy October, everyone! We have a new Commander Collection from WotC full of wonderful lore and some submitted edits from super-fan Wesley, so there have been some new additions to the site:

  • The Pyrexian JumpStart Swamp has been added to the New Phyrexia page as it was curiously missing before - most likely an oversight on my end. Fun fact: that’s a Phyrexian Obliterator in the background!

  • Good-Fortune Unicorn from Modern Horizons has been added to the Plane of Mountains & Seas, as the setting (a bamboo forest) matches the plane fairly well. In addition, the unicorn resembles the Guanshu/Quan Shu from Chinese Mythology.

  • Wasteland from Secret Lair Mark Poole has been added to Rabiah, as it’s a visual sequel to the Library of Alexandria done by the same artist.

  • Inferno Elemental has been added to Regatha thanks to a keen insight into the flavour text. Chandra mentions a monastery, and as she trained at the one in Keral Keep on Regatha as a teenager it fits perfectly. That plane has a lot of red cards.

As for the Secret Lair contents, they’ve been sorted as follows:

  • Liliana, Heretical Healer has new art, and is joining her original printing on Dominaria. The same can be said for Ghoulcaller Gisa heading to Innistrad.

  • Reanimate is being put on Ulgrotha, as the flavour text is by Baron Sengir himself.

  • Phyrexian Arena has been placed on New Phyrexia, as the art depicts a gigantic statue of Sheoldred, one of the praetors, surveying over the battle.

  • Toxic Deluge is off to (old) Phyrexia as it clearly shows Yawgmoth in the skies above the acid-rain-soaked surface of his plane.

  • Command Tower is off to Innistrad as it’s a visual of Davriel’s castle/manor.

  • Sadly, I’m still not sure where Ophinomancer belongs, new or old.

_______________

09/24/2021

Fellow Vorthos James pointed out that the art for Chris Rahn’s ‘Eternal Witness’ fits well with the new aesthetic for autumn Innistrad from the new Midnight Hunt set. It’s been added to the Innistrad Plane Page. Thanks, James!

_______________

09/23/2021

The Strixhaven mystical archives variant of Gods Willing has been added to the Eldraine planar page. Initially printed in Theros, artist Dominik Mayer mentioned on his Twitter that it features a knight from Throne of Eldraine.

In addition, cards from the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Commander sets have been added to the Innistrad planar page.

_______________

09/10/2021

A few updates for everyone before the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt commander cards make their way over to the Innistrad planar page.

  • Thanks to keen-eyed fan Cat, Liquimetal Torque has been added to the Fiora planar page. Cat noted that the character quoted in the flavor text is Ervos Trax, a character that only appears in an Uncharted Realms article called "The Black Rose” and who works for Marchesa.

  • Thanks to mega-Vorthos Philip, we have many additions to Shandalar based on flavour text: Maritime Guard, Illusory Ambusher, Divination, Encrust, Prized Unicorn, Oakenform, Windstorm, Advocate of the Beast, Marauding Maulhorn, Kite Shield, Wall of Frost, & Wall of Swords. Vow of Flight has been added to Fiora. And Armored Cancrix and Disentomb have been added to Dominaria.

New updates from some keen-eyed fans. Firstly, a new entry has been made to the Unknown Worlds page: Plane of Boundless Forms. Suggested by JDVred this is the home to the Modern Horizons changelings.

Thanks to a great insight by Lina, Glimpse of Tomorrow from Modern Horizons 2 has been added to Segovia. I’ll let them explain:

  • (comparing to Segovian Angel) Both cards have a distinct Ancient Rome inspired architecture, and while both cards do not depict the same hippodrome in Segovian Angel, the layout of the buildings is similar enough to be worth noting.

  • The colour palettes are very similar as well. If you hold these two cards next to each other, they definitely have the vibe of being in the same world.

  • Aside from that Segovian Angel, only two other cards have ever been printed for this plane. First there's Segovian Leviathan from Legends. According to Bolas, Segovia is largely an aquatic plane, and there is certainly an ocean in the distance of Glimpse of Tomorrow, further supporting my theory.

  • The Planechase card for Segovia depicts a hippodrome, though in Ancient Rome they called it a circus; hippodromes were in Ancient Greece. In addition to MTG, I have seen a few other non-MTG sources use the term hippodrome in place of circus for racetracks with an Ancient Rome aesthetic and suspect this largely has to do with the modern perception the general public has of a circus and reducing confusion.

  • What Glimpse of Tomorrow this card does mechanically though is what really sells it as being on Segovia, in tandem with all else. It is a miniature Warp World, and Segovia is the plane where everything warps into something, well, miniature!

Two missing secret lairs have been added to the planar pages. Happy Yargle Day was added to Dominaria, as Yargle is a Dominarian native, and Showcase: Strixhaven has been added to Strixhaven for obvious reasons.

It was inevitable… Hell finally has a planar page. It’s a bit different than our usual planes because of how bizarre the history of it is, but that’s part of the fun of something as expansive as Magic.

In addition, Howling Wolf from Conspiracy has been added to the Innistrad plane page after keen-eyed vorthos Philip noticed the Church of Avacyn symbol on the gravestone in the art.

07/22/2021

With recent feedback from some fans, we’ve gone ahead and shifted the page design to allow for more tiles on our main pages to be viewed at once. Less scrolling for everyone!

In addition, we’ve got two new concept art pages up: Arcavios/Strixhaven and Rath. Check em’ out!

We’ve added a new concept art page! With the release of Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, Wizards of the Coast created new concepts to go along with it. Check them out on the Concept Art Page.

Thanks to some great spots from fellow Vorthos Dylan, Faerie Invaders has been added to the Eldraine planar page, the missing lands from The Plane of Mountains and Seas have been added, and new entries for the Unknown Worlds page have been added as well. That page may undergo an overhaul soon to accommodate for so much new content, so stay tuned!

The final part of the Multiverse review for Modern Horizons 2 is up! In addition, the cards have been added to their respective planes.

Additionally, some cards have been made to the individual Planar Pages thanks to keen-eyed vorthos fans of Magic including Wesley, Texh, and Humble Pi:

  • Squirrel Mob (Secret Lair) has been added to Zendikar’s planar page as the flavour text is spoken by Samila of Murasa Expeditionary House. Murasa is on Zendikar, on Tazeem.

  • Ponder (Secret Lair) has been added to Ikoria’s planar page. The flavor text is spoken by Rielle, the Everwise, of Ikoria.

  • Path of Ancestry (Secret Lair) has been added to Dominaria. The art depicts Jolrael, a spellshaper well known on the plane.

  • Soul Feast (Tenth Edition) has been added to Ulgrotha along with Lifeforce (5th Edition). The flavour text on Lifeforce is between Autumn Willow and Baron Sengir, two denizens of the plane, though the art itself is… questionable. While the flavour text of Soul Feast refers to Yuri, a Sengir Vampire. Although Sengir vampires are on both Dominaria and Ulgrotha, the art’s famished beast seems fitting for the mana-starved world of Ulgrotha.

  • Talisman of Conviction has been added to Ixalan as the flavour text from Huatli (who, admittedly, is a planeswalker) points towards it, but also because it takes place on the deck of a pirate ship, with map and pirate saber around it to add to the visual hints.

  • Colossus Hammer has been added to Kaldheim given the art’s rendering of a braided, possibly dwarven warrior holding a massive hammer etched with norse-style runes. It’s not a solid lock but it feels thematically appropriate for now.

  • Wildfire Elemental (M20) has been added to Kaladesh because of the background: the filigree style of the architecture behind it are iconic to the plane.

  • Chromatic Orrery and Watcher of the Spheres were initially holdouts from M21, but they’ve been placed in Arcavios. The Watcher matches the owl-style aven from the plane and the architectural style of the Orrery matches the stylings of the Biblioplex and the Stadium, and the clothing is a close match as well.

Fan Philip pointed out that somehow Sword of Vengeance from M11 wasn’t on the Dominaria page, despite being an obvious plant of Akroma’s sword. I’ve since added it back to the gallery.

Part three of the four-part review of Modern Horizons 2 has been published, covering gold and green cards. If you’d like to read it, head on over here. The cards that I’ve discussed in the reviews so far (all but artifacts and lands) have also been added to their respective planar pages. In addition, I’ve added a new Unknown World entry with the connection of Sephara and Skyblade’s Boon from MH2.

Part two of the four-part review of Modern Horizons 2 has been published! Read it here. I’ve also gone ahead and added the Mystical Archives and a nod to the nature of the Biblioplex to the Strixhaven page page of Arcavios thanks to a great recommendation by fellow Vorthos Teddy.

The first part of the four-part review of Modern Horizons 2 has been published! In it I’m taking a crack at evaluating every card in MH2 and seeing if I can get them all to their homes in the multiverse. Read it here.

A few quick updates to follow up the last Spring Update (and before I have the great task of sorting Modern Horizons 2!):

  • We’re famous! Thanks to a call-out during the Twitch stream by JJtheManCub, we found a new Innistrad cube and opted to include even more cards. Adding Winding Way, Stuffy Doll, Ferocious Pup, Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord, Twin-Silk Spider, and Scour all Possibilities to Innistrad’s planar page.

  • Fan Philip pointed out that Reign of the Pit was accidentally excluded from Fiora despite obviously being located there; this has been corrected.

  • New Planeswalker concept art has been added for Ral Zarek, Gideon, Chandra, Calix, and Nahiri.

_______________

05/10/2021 - Spring Update

It’s been a while! This is a big update everyone: not only for the additions for the new set Strixhaven, but the addition of new planes to the MtG Multiverse. Changes include:

New Page Additions:

New Card Additions:

  • Both keen-eyed Vorthos fans Peter and Soulreavereternal noted separately that Gaze of Granite from IDW was not actually a Ravnican gorgon, but a Therosian one given the snake lower body. It has been added to the Theros page accordingly.

  • Daniel Z noted that on Springbloom Druid from modern horizons, it’s the only elf printed outside of Kaldheim with a beard. This means that like his fellow berserker brethren, he belongs amidst the World Tree and has been added accordingly.

  • Kamigawa collector Luca noted that Ninja of the New Moon would be a great fit for Kamigawa, and I agree. Especially after the Kami of the Smiling Moon was killed at the end of Saviors of Kamigawa, a New Moon adds even more fun intrigue to the plane. Plus, it’s a spirit ninja, the two things Kamigawa is known for. Cunning Evasion was also added.

  • Fan Dylan made a number of great observations about extended lore cards, including Grinning Ignus fitting on the hypothetical Victorian London-inspired plane, given the location and flavour text. The same goes for M19’s Vengeant Vampire.

  • A newer player, Wesley, keenly pointed out that The Eldraine Wonderland Secret Lair featured the 5 snow-covered basics in Eldraine, and The MagicFest 2020 promo lands were all on Kylem, so those have been added to the page. He also made a good argument for Doubling Season from Double Masters belonging to Muraganda, so I thought it was kind to the prehistory world to add it on over.

  • Dougal noted that both Marath and Animar’s original lore articles list their origins as ‘unknown planes’. Although I feel that of known planes, Shandalar is the best fit for them by far, this precludes them from inclusion, so they both have been removed from the Shandalar page.

  • Whirlwind Denial from Mystical Archives added to Kamigawa

  • Volcanic Visions from Commander 2021 added to Tarkir

  • Secret Lair titans added to Kaldheim

  • Slurrk, All-ingesting added to Ravnica.

  • Beast Within to Ikoria (tentative).

  • Secret Lair: Ultimate Edition lands have been added to Kylem and Zendikar.

  • Shockland Secret Lair:

New Unknown Worlds:

  • Kinetic Magic World

  • World of Scripted Rites

  • Homes of Wyleth & Sunsteel

01/11/2021

With news that the Immersturm is a realm of Kaldheim, I have combined the Valla and Kaldheim pages together. In addition, I’ve added more content based on what we know so far, including names of the realms and known Gods.

_______________

11/22/2020

Spot update for today: I’ve moved the full-art Doubling Season from Ixalan to Ikoria because of an insight from reddit user EmptyStar12. Essentially, the dinosaurs on Ixalan are feathered and brightly colored creatures, whereas the ones of Ikoria are more reptilian, with the bright jeweled colors.

_______________

11/07/2020

I’ve got a few spot updates today:

First is that the esteemed fantasy artist Mark Tedin (yes, that Mark Tedin) contacted me about updating much of the early Magic concept art attribution, especially for Serra’s Realm and Phyrexia. One of the things I try to always do with MtG-Multiverse is make sure that all artists have their work attributed correctly, but there is always room for human error. Much of the early artwork for Magic that was never classically published with the artist name attached is difficult to connect without having the inside scoop into what was going on behind the scenes in the 90’s and early 2000s’. Mark has provided us with that, and in doing so has set the record straight. To him, Matt Wilson, Anthony Waters, Chippy, Kev Walker, Dana Knutson, and all the other early concept artists and art directors, you have my sincere apologies. If you ever see a misattribution or missing attribution for an artist, please don’t hesitate to let me know by emailing at mtgmultiverse.feedback@gmail.com or sending me a message on Twitter.

Speaking of concept art, the concept art for Tamiyo has been released recently by artist Eric Deschamps, and has been added to the Planeswalker concept art page.

Fellow Vorthos fans Casey and Marshall have also given the site some new adjustments. Casey brought up the Magic Premiere Shop lands from the early 2000’s, and in doing so a lot of new basic lands with unique plane-specific art have been added to the site. In addition, Marshall made a great argument for bringing Scaretiller back to Shadowmoor/Lorwyn, where I had initially placed it. Thanks everyone!

_______________

11/06/2020 - Commander Legends & Commander Collection: Green Update

Commander Legends is here, and it’s brought goodies for almost every single plane page, and led to the creation of a few more Unknown Worlds entries and added to some of the pre-existing ones. There’s lots of cards still unplaced, although the articles for Legendary Characters of Commander Legends on the mothership are helping quite a bit. I’m getting ready to create a ‘Blind Eternities’ entry thanks to cards like The Chromatic Piper and The Ur Dragon, and depending on what comes out, one for ‘Stryxhaven’ as well.

_______________

10/06/2020

It somehow escaped my notice that Myriad Landscape was given new art in the Zendikar Resurgent Commander decks. This means it can officially be added to the Zendikar plane page!

_______________

09/22/2020

Given the announcement this summer, I’ve added a plane page for Kaldheim and have begun the search for relevant cards, knowing little beyond the norse set theme. I may end up moving Chain of Vapor from Valla over, depending on how the set looks.

_______________

09/21/2020

I love mail from fellow vorthos fans. One of the many reasons is that you all bring your new and varied perspectives to the game, and often catch things I miss! One such email I received from the keen-eyed Daniel Zeilicovich has led me to re-assign Gallant Cavalry to the plane of Alara from the ‘Generic Fantasy’ world. This argument had been made before, but “it doesn’t not-fit” was never particularly compelling. Daniel, on the other hand, pointed out that the cards Knight Captain of Eos and Steward of Valeron having very similar armor designs and unique tall shoulder plates. In addition, he mentioned how the castle in the background is actually unique architecture to Bant, as featured in the Alara-specific John Avon land. Bravo, Daniel!

_______________

09/20/2020 - Zendikar Rising Update

With the release of Zendikar Rising, the latest jaunt to Zendikar, I’ve gone ahead and update the Zendikar plane page with new content. A link to the new set on Scryfall is on the side bar, and I’ve updated the lore to add in elements of the new history we’ve heard, including the Skycleaves and Nahiri’s new adventure plot. In addition, because they’re not part of the basic set (unlike Eldraine, because they’re not standard legal) I’ve added in the handfull of new Zendikar Rising Commander cards to the page. In my research, I also happened upon the card Terra Ravager, which I had sworn was already on the page, but was not. I corrected the oversight.

_______________

08/17/2020

Arena has previewed two new cards for the ‘beginner’ tutorial; these are luckily fairly obvious new additions to Innistrad and Tarkir.

_______________

08/13/2020 - Amonkhet Remastered Update

I know that the set is an Arena exclusive, but the new cards they’ve added to the combination Amonkhet/Hour set have some pretty sweet art, and so I’ve opted to add them to the Amonkhet page. I also opted not to add the cards that were already masterpieces and part of the initial release. In addition, I’ve retroactively added the Planeswalkers from the Archenemy: Nicol Bolas product, because the art there is very explicitly plane-bound and great for any Vorthos to include in an Amonkhet-themed cube or deck. I can only hope we get some new, paper printings of the new Amonkhet Remastered cards sometime soon.

_______________

07/25/2020

Although a review article isn’t up yet, I’ve sorted out the new cards from JumpStart! into the MtG-Multiverse on numerous planes, in addition to a few random cards I realized I’d missed in the past.

_______________

07/05/2020

Thanks to the keen eye of Виктор Булатов yet again, I’ve decided to remove Chief Engineer from the Kaladesh page and relocate it onto the unknown worlds page under the Steampunk World entry. The vedalken has the wrong number of fingers, but in addition the 'gears in the back are far too industrial and dark to be anything on Kaladesh. And although this doesn’t necesserally preclude a card from entry onto a plane, the original art brief mentions that it’s not part of a particular location.

_______________

07/03/2020

Fellow vorthos Виктор Булатов sent a note with a fantastic justification for the inclusion of Fugitive Wizard on Ravnica as a guildless Ravnican. In their own words: “There is a generic high fantasy cityscape around her (which fits Ravnica and many other planes), but her name is definitely Slavic. Siyani is a letter away from Siyanie, which would be a Russian word Сияние meaning shining or glow (fitting for a wizard).” As Ravnica is very slavic, I think this is a great inclusion!

_______________

06/30/2020

I have been absolutely floored by all of the wonderful fan mail and feedback that I’ve gotten on the M21 set review! I’ve made updates to my card assignments based on a number of keen-eyed vorthos fans, so check it out for the updates!

_______________

06/29/2020 - M21 Update

The full set review for M21 is here! You can find the third, and largest of the set reviews over on the Set Review page. I’m excited to heat the feedback from the community and would love insight into things that you all think I got right or wrong. Up next: Jumpstart!

In addition, new updates have been made to the Unknown Worlds page from M21. There are new cards in the Scifi, Steampunk, High Fantasy, and Victorian World entries. In addition, I’ve made a section for the Elemental-Kin world from M20.

_______________

06/28/2020

While writing my M21 review, I found that “The Forward Order” is a caste of knights from Vess, on Dominaria. I removed Cleric of the Forward Order from Alara where it had been misplaced and put it in Dominaria where it belongs.

_______________

06/22/2020

I stumbled upon the Judge promo for Burning Wish and realized it was a good visual fit for Rabiah. Given that the plane receives very little in terms of updates, I’ve opted to add it to the plane page.

_______________

06/04/2020 - Chandra Signature Spellbook Update

There’s a new Signature Spellbook! This one is for our favorite pyromancer, Chandra, and although these cards are all beautiful, only one shows a specific plane with the new art. ‘Rite of Flame’ shows Chandra’s spark igniting, and so it’s been added to the Kaladesh plane page. Also, M21 spoilers begin today. With a multi-plane approach, I’ll be doing a full M21 set review, so keep your eyes peeled!

_______________

05/02/2020

Concept at bonanza! I’ve added two new concept art pages for the art lovers out there: one for Ikoria and one for Planeswalkers. In addition, thanks to Reddit user MediocreBeard, I’ve been made aware that Ring of Three Wishes from M14 is actually a D&D reference and added it to the Unknown Worlds page.

_______________

04/11/2020 - Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Update

Ikoria is here! In a first, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths represents the first set released with a side-by-side themed set of Commander decks, meaning it came out immediately with cards for us to showcase here at MtG-Multiverse. This may be the way of the future, which means all the more Vorthos love, but for now we’re having fun going back and seeing what cards (like Slippery Bogle from Masters 25) fit in on Ikoria.

_______________

03/19/2020

Finally some new planar content! Wizards announced a new Secret Lair for the enemy fetchlands, and even told us where the new art was located. In this case, we got Lorwyn (Marsh Flats), Dominaria (Scalding Tarn), Innistrad (Verdant Catacombs), Amonkhet (Arid Mesa), and Ixalan (Misty Rainforest), so those have all been added to their respective plane pages. I’m keeping my eye on the new Chandra Signature Spellbook for flavour gems as well as that premiers.

_______________

01/07/2020

Happy new year! As part of the ongoing spoilers for Theros: Beyond Death, I’ve been refreshing myself on my Therosian lore, and decided that including the Masterpiece Elspeth, Knight-Errant on Theros was the right call. Normally I don’t include planeswalkers on a plane (they, by definition, aren’t bound by planar rules), but in some instances, where the art or card depicts a very specific planar entity or event, I’ll make an exception. Jace the Living Guildpact was the first exception, and Elspeth makes the second with her choosing to craft her mask.

_______________

12/16/2019

As always, I love feedback from the MtG community. After some discussion and great points over on the /r/mtgvorthos subreddit, I’ve decided to move Accumulated Knowledge from Theros to Ravnica, and add Sungrace Pegasus to Theros.

_______________

12/10/2019

It’s December, and the new Judge Foils have premiered! Three of them fall well into the known multiverse: Innistrad, Theros, and Zendikar have new additions.

_______________

11/24/2019

Thanks to a message from a sharp Redditor, I was made aware that Silent Clearing from Modern Horizons depicts a scene on Ixalan. It’s been added to the Ixalan Page!

_______________

11/13/2019

Added Temple Bell to the Kamigawa page after considering it for a while; it matches up too well with so much that we’ve seen from the world.

_______________

11/10/2019

I’ve added Sarkhan’s Catharsis to the Meditation Realm page after seeing it pointed out by one sharp-eyed Redditor.

_______________

11/02/2019

Concept art has been added to the new Eldraine concept page. This currently has all the known concept art I’ve been able to find, both in the newly released Planeswalkers’s Guide to Eldraine and on Twitter.

The ‘Updates Page’ is now live, for showing new additions to the site and adjustments/changes as The MtG-Multiverse grows and evolves.
